Winter Shelter

The Winter Shelter is primarily funded through a contract with the Los Angeles Homeless Authority (LAHSA). However, without the churches and the generous dedication of many volunteers, this program would not be possible.

The Winter Shelter opens on December 1st and operates continuously until March 1st. The Coalition contacts and arranges for the different church sites for a two-week stay and transports the clients to each site. It coordinates the thousands of volunteers who provide food, clothing, hygiene kits, soap, and towels for the showers and other supplies. Click Here for a list of host churches.

No one is turned away who comes for help, however, strict rules are enforced to prevent alcohol and drug abuse in the shelter. The goal is to feed the hungry, bind up the wounds of the sick, and provide a warm, safe, dry place to rest. Each person is treated with dignity and respect as guests in our church homes. For the homeless, a common cold can make a rough life on the streets unbearable. Connie Brehm, associate nursing professor at Azusa Pacific University, overseas the weekly healthcare program at the shelter. The clinic brings in student nurses and other medical personnel who examine hundreds of homeless clients, dispensing medicines, comfort, and referrals for problems that need further treatment.

The shelter has offered free flu shots, and TB testing through the efforts of John Jennings and the County Health Services. Mental health counseling is also available from the County Mental Health Department. VA representatives have come to help homeless veterans.

Case Management is also an important part of the Shelter, a source of counsel, an understanding ear, and resources to help clients connect with all social service agencies. The Case Management staff works closely with Project Achieve and the West Covina Community Services Center.
