The East San Gabriel Valley Coalition for the Homeless brought faith leaders from across the region together Wednesday, Oct 26 to pay tribute to the 561 homeless people who died in the county from Nov. 2015 through Sept. 2016.
“We wanted to give them the love and recognition they deserve.” Rabbi David Mattis from Temple Sholom of Ontario, Marcie Hoopes from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Inman Said Seddock from the San Gabriel Valley Islamic Center, Venerable Hui Dong from the His Lai Temple and Bishop David O’Connell from Catholic Archdiocese of Los Angeles spoke in remembrance of those homeless and to urge attendees to help in any way they can.
Music was provided by pianist Bryan Pezzone and violinist Mikaela Telesforo. Fr. Bill Easterling, pastor of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, welcomed participants and opened the service with a prayer. Fr. Steve De Muth from Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Covina and Debra Boudreaux from the Tzue Chi Foundation read verbally names aloud for a number of homeless persons who had passed. Deacon Ron Butler from Sacred Heart Catholic Church assisted greatly with the screen presentations operated by Diane Hopkins while Richard Hopkins acted as Master of Ceremonies. Irma Martz from St. John Vianney Catholic Church was in charge of the reception. Numerous individuals and organizations provided publicity from print, and radio. The service was well attended.
